It's the question our colourists at Nacre Skin Studio hear most often. Balayage and highlights both add brightness, but they're applied differently and suit different routines. Choosing the right one comes down to how often you want to visit and the finish you're after.
Balayage is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair, concentrating brightness where light naturally hits.
How balayage works
Balayage is painted freehand onto the surface of the hair, concentrating brightness where light naturally hits. Because the root stays soft and diffused, regrowth is gentle and most clients refresh every three to four months. It's ideal if you want low maintenance and a lived-in look.
How highlights work
Foil highlights are woven from root to tip in fine or chunky sections, giving uniform, all-over brightness. The result is more defined and lifts lighter, but the regrowth line is more visible, so you'll want a refresh every eight to ten weeks.
Which suits you?
If you love a blended, sun-kissed look and want fewer appointments, choose balayage. If you want maximum brightness or to blend grey, highlights or a mix of both often work best. Many of our favourite results combine the two.
