Laundry uses a lot of water, energy and plastic. Since Twill & Thread Cleaners opened, we've been working out how to do it with less, without compromising on clean. Here's what we've changed and what you can try at home.
Modern solvents, not perc
Traditional dry cleaning relies on perchloroethylene, a solvent with health and environmental concerns. We switched to a modern, biodegradable alternative that's odourless and gentler on fibres, and our clothes come back without the chemical smell.
Lower temperatures, fuller loads
Today's enzyme-based detergents clean brilliantly at 30°C. Our machines weigh every load and dose detergent and water automatically, using up to 40% less water than standard machines. At home, washing at 30°C and running full loads makes the biggest difference.
Fewer plastics and fewer miles
Reusable cotton laundry bags replaced single-use plastic, wire hangers are collected and reused, and garment covers are made from recycled material. Our delivery vans are electric and routes are planned to keep miles to a minimum.
Small swaps at home
Skip fabric softener on towels and sportswear, where it reduces absorbency anyway. Air-dry when you can, use a microfibre-catching wash bag for synthetics and wash jeans far less often than you think. Your clothes will last longer too.
