It's the question we're asked more than any other at the front desk. Both happen once a year, both involve a technician looking over your car, but they do very different jobs.
The MOT: a legal snapshot
The MOT checks that your car meets minimum road safety and environmental standards on the day of the test. It covers lights, brakes, tyres, steering, seatbelts, emissions and more, but the tester doesn't take anything apart or change any fluids. A pass means the car was safe that day, not that it's in good health.
The service: looking after the engine
A service is preventative maintenance. We change the oil and filters, check wear on parts that the MOT doesn't look at closely and spot problems before they become breakdowns. Skipping services is the most common reason we see worn-out engines and seized brakes.
Why doing both together makes sense
Booking the MOT and service on the same day means one trip to the garage, and any problems found during the service can be fixed before the MOT, so you're far less likely to fail. We take £15 off the combined price too.
